History

The NLB League was formed on July 3, 2001 and started the tournament in the fall of that year. The league was formed with 12 teams, 4 teams from Croatia, 4 teams from Slovenia, 3 teams from Bosnia-Herzegovina and also 1 team from FR Yugoslavia.

During the 2002-2003 season, the league stayed with 12 teams, one of the teams got out of the league but Maccabi Tel Aviv joined the league instead.

Starting in 2002 and until 2004 the league played the "Final Four", that were playoffs with the four top teams. Then in 2005 they moved to their current playoff format, having the top eight teams in the "Final Eight".

After one season team Maccabi left the league, however the league prolonged to 14 teams for the following 2003-04 season and 16 for 2004-05. In 2005-06 two teams left the league to have only 14 teams that season.

Two of the sponsorships for the league are Nova Ijubljanska banka and Goodyear. Because of the sponsorship with Nova the league was renamed NLB League.
