History
- The Copa America was initiated in 1916 and is the oldest National Teams’ competition in the world.
- The tournament reached its 42nd edition and is played every two years.
- The teams from Argentina and Uruguay both hold a total of 14 titles each that makes them the best clubs in America.
- In the past, the competition was known as the South American National Teams´ Competition before the name formally changed to Copa America.
- As of 1993, for every edition of the tournament has welcomed two invitees in order to further expand the competition throughout Latin America, Mexico and USA.
- In 2004, there were a total of 12 countries participating in the Copa, 10 of which were from South America along with Costa Rica and Mexico.
