Based in Oakland, California, the Oakland Raiders are members of the American Football Conference’s West Division in the National Football League. The team was first established in 1960 as part of the American Football League, a rival to the NFL. The Raiders joined the NFL after the 1970 AFL-NFL merger.

After a rocky first few years, the Raiders proved enormously successful. Between 1963 – the point in which Al Davis acted as head coach and general manager – and 2003 the Raiders experienced only 7 losing seasons.

The height of the Raiders’ success came in the 1970s, when the team won 6 Division Championships and 1 Conference Championship, made 7 playoffs appearances, and claimed one Super Bowl title.

In 1982, Davis moved the team to Los Angeles, where the Raiders remained until 1995, when they moved back to Oakland. Despite the move, the 1990s proved an extremely lackluster decade for the team, which failed to claim any division or conference titles; nor did the Northern California team make any appearances in the playoffs.

Then, in 2000, under head coach Jon Gruden, Oakland went for a 12-4 season, an AFC title, and a run in the playoffs that the Raiders hadn’t experienced for a decade, since 1990. In the offseason, the Raiders signed Jerry Rice, the NFL’s all-time leading receiver. The following years gave similar results; the Raiders would claim AFC titles in the next two seasons.

In 2003, however, the Raiders hit a sudden slump. Under coach Bill Callahan, the team fell to a 4-12 record. Callahan was fired and replaced by Washington Redskins coach Norv Turner. But Turner was unable to improve the team’s record; in 2004, the team lolled in the cellar with another 4-12 record. Turner was eventually fired and, in 2006, former coach Art Shell was resigned as head coach.

Shell, however, could not save the team. The Raiders’ 2006 record fell yet again, to 2-14, and for the first time since 1962, the Raiders had earned, by claiming the NFL’s worst record, the first pick in the 2007 NFL Draft. The Raiders, under yet another head coach, Lane Kiffin, signed JaMarcus Russell as quarterback, to no avail. The Raiders had a 4-12 record in 2007.

In 2008, Tom Cable was named interim head coach and was eventually signed in 2009. His first coaching season showed some improvement for the team; the Raiders’ regular season record was boosted up to 5-11, earning them third place in the AFC West – the first time since 2002 that the team had avoided the cellar.

In the 2009 NFL Draft, the Raiders signed wide receivers Darrius Heyward-Bey and Slade Norris; defensive back Michael Mitchell; defensive ends Matt Shaughnessy, Louis Murphy, and Stryker Sulak; and tight end Brandon Myers.
