Cotto Might Have to Defend his Title on His Own

By: Cindy Ferguson

Miguel Cotto may have to defend his title on his own as his trainer did not show up for a very important news conference this past Wednesday. Although; Cotto mentioned that his uncle is still part of the group and has his hopes up many have their doubts.

Evangelista, Cotto’s uncle, is the man who taught Cotto and is responsible for making him a WBA Welterweight Champion. However, this time around he might not be sitting in the corner in Atlantic City and might just leave his nephew all alone while he goes for a shot at defending his title against Alfonso Gomez on Saturday night.

This supposedly started due to a disagreement he had with Evangelista, even though no one would corroborate as to that being the cause for his nonappearance. At the news conference he was accompanied only by his father Miguel Sr. and co-trainer Jose Gomez, this is what got rumors started regarding his trainer.

It was very odd for the third time champion, who is also preparing for his fourth defense WBA crown to not be escorted by the man who led him to the top and is accountable for his performance.

According to Jose Gomez, Evangelista did not make himself present because he was busy with other trainers, but seriously how busy can you really be to not have time to attend to such an important meeting? In my opinion that is a poor excuse. In this industry the most common and correct thing is for the athlete to be accompanied by his coach.

The Puerto Rican has been very well prepared for his previous fight and currently posses a record of 31-0 including 25 knockouts, which is obviously the reason he is the defending champ and is well known for putting up a good show that is filled with action.

His last fight in Atlantic City was on December 2, 2006 against Carlos Quintana and he knocked him out to win the WBA Crown. Others players he has stopped include Oktay Urkal, Zab Judah and barley outpointed Shane Mosley in his title defenses.

Cotto is a main attraction in the New York area and is sure that he will have a lot of support from his fans and actually likes to fight on the Eastern Coast of the United States.

His opponent, Gomez, is currently 18-3-2 as a pro and became more popular after the appearance on the TV series “The Contender” and after he knocked out Arturo Gatti in seven rounds.

Gomez affirmed he will enter the fight with all his power, jab, uppercut and anything and everything it will take to win and although he acknowledged that Cotto is a great champion, he said he expects to beat him and take home the title and he also stated that the power of his mind and skills will be put to the test this Saturday night.
