MLB - Florida Marlins Start the Season with the Right Foot Forward
By Ally White
Currently at first place in the National League East, the Florida Marlins started with the right foot forward this season with an 11-1 record, the best win-loss record in the MLB. The Marlins played impressively in their last 12 games, of which they won 7 games straight; the last three were won either in the last inning or in an extra inning. Some critics have been very surprised by the effect that the Marlins are having this season, especially with their talented but younger squad. Some analysts have said that it is easy to have such a record after winning 6 games to the worst team in the league, the Washington Nationals. However, after the Marlins also won the series against the Mets and defeated the Atlanta Braves, the critics were shut down.
During their last three games, the Marlins stole the game from their opponents, who often led from the beginning, but the Marlins, coming from nowhere, would pull an incredible win. That was the case with Sunday’s game. On Sunday, they trailed from the first inning on until Cody Ross hit his third home run of the season, a solo shot to left. That brought the Marlins the win in the end with a 7-4 in the ninth inning.
At the end of the game, the Marlins player Cody Ross expressed his satisfaction and the good work of his young but talented team, which is now 6-0 in the road.
“When we're down, nobody panics. We have a feeling that we're going to win, and it's just a matter of time. That's the way we've approached it the last week or so, and it's paid off for us. It's too hard. It's mentally draining. It's a lot easier to score runs early and try to hold on to victory. But, either way, we'll take it,'' explained Cody Ross.
The Florida Marlins have demonstrated that success is not necessarily about having the priciest players, but is instead about having the greatest team of players, players who are willing to work hard in every game and would sacrifice each other for the good of the team. The pitching group has been amazing so far this season, combining a 3.24 run average and close to one strikeout per inning, an impressive combination. The batting has also been great; the Marlins have hit close to a .278 and .446 striking percentage. Moreover, the player Cody Ross has helped the team amazingly – but that doesn’t mean that the rest of the players haven’t done their part. In every game there is a new hero for the Marlins.
Now, with this inspirational start, the Marlins expect to keep their winning pace in the next games and keep adding victories to their record. Their following series will be a three game home stand against the defending World Series Champion, the Philadelphia Phillies, which will start on April 24. The Marlins expect their 8th straight game win against the Phillies. We wish the best of luck to this talented and young Florida team.
