Milwaukee Brewers - Doug Melvin Signs a 3 year contract extension as General Manager
By Audrey Nolan
The Milwaukee Brewers announced that they have signed up Doug Melvin as General Manager in a three year contract extension. They took the decision based on the accomplishments the team has reached this season, such as moving forward to the postseason. They also think that the leadership he has in the team is unique, and that’s what is making them better and more competitive too.
He has been with the Brewers for six years now. The president of the team Mark Atanasio has always been very confident with the work that Melvin has been doing through the years. Melvin has changed the culture and the performance that the club had for many years. He has expressed that he is very grateful and happy that the club considered him for an extension and to be the leader of the Milwaukee Brewers until 2012.
The Brewers have also cleared up that they were no longer considering Dale Sveum to take the position of manager. He was named interim manager last September 15th, after Nem Yost was fired. This season the team reached the postseason for the first time since 1982 but lost in the first round of the playoffs against Philadelphia.
Nevertheless, Melvin has said that he considers that Sveum should stay in the coaching staff since he has been very important for the club. He explained that Sveum was a key for the team to reach the playoffs this year.
On the other hand, Sveum stated that he is heart-broken since he got informed of the decision. He was very disappointed and said that the odds on him to stay in the coaching staff under a new manager are very low and that the worse part for him is that he will not wear the Brewers uniform anymore.
Among the best accomplishments of Doug Melvin in the team this year was the trading of the pitcher CC Sabathia in last July. Most of the directives of the club consider that Sabathia has been a key player for the Brewers this season and that he was the one that made it possible for them to be in the playoffs this year.
When the Brewers traded Sabathia there was no warranty on him signing up with them for the following season, since he will be available for free agency after the World Series. Sabathia said that he enjoyed the time that he spent with the Brewers and the fans were also very pleased with his performance as they assisted to the games to see him pitch.
Melvin said that the team is willing to try to make him sign with the Brewers for a long term contract, since before him, they didn’t even have a chance of signing a pitcher as good as Sabathia. Currently at least they have the chance; however, it seems very possible that he will find a team near his home town in California. There also very strong rumors about him being pretended by the Yankees, but even though, the Brewers will not know what is going to happen with Sabathia until the World Series are over.
