NCAA - North Carolina wins the National Championship
By Audrey Nolan
In a very interesting night, the North Carolina Tar Heels overcame the Michigan State Spartans to win the National Championship title; the fifth actually for the North Carolina team. With a great performance of their star players, UNC had a complete victory of 89-72 over the team of Michigan State, who didn’t have their best night yesterday at Ford Field in Detroit.
North Carolina took the lead of the game since the beginning hitting six of their seven shots putting the score 17-7 on their favor. Those 17 points that they scored at the beginning of the game where the ones that gave them the victory since Michigan State was not able to make the difference lower; in the whole game the difference between the both of them was no lower than 15 points.
Roy Williams, UNC’s coach, was very proud of his players since there was always teamwork among all of them; the defense was outstanding having Ty Lawson with a record of eight steals during the complete game. Lawson as always, made the difference with a great performance, he was better in this game than in any other game that he had played before; he scored a total of 21 points and had 6 assists.
"I felt like it was fitting for us to do what this group just accomplished," coach Roy Williams said. "Roy Williams is not that good, but boy, ol' Roy's got some big-time players. That's what it takes."I desperately wanted this championship for that young man," Williams said. "I know it's corny, but that's who I am."
For the Michigan State coach, Tom Izzo, the game was won by the best. He said that they couldn’t do anything against North Carolina and the way they played last night. The Tar Heels have a group of great players that are NBA talented. Izzo also explained that they did not play the way the have been playing all year long. They had problems in every part of the game, offensively and defensively too. While the North Carolina team was ready to come out and show why they were on the final, Michigan State didn’t even come out to fight for what they have been working all season; they had problems even to get back the ball after the other team scored.
For his part, Tyler Hansbrough was outstanding too; from all of the team players, he was the one who really worked as hard as he could to accomplish what they did at the end. He decided to stay with UNC one more year because he loves college and because he wanted his last year to be unforgettable and even though he had a better season last year, the end of this one was much better. He finished the game with 18 points.
The National Championship title came for North Carolina four years after they won the last one and for the first time with a roaster of his own recruits. There’s no doubt that this title was well deserved since they started and finished as No. 1.
