Devils Will not be in Bad Shape for the Trade Deadline

By: Cindy Ferguson

This year the New Jersey Devils are in good shape for this seasons trade deadline. In past years the teams limited salary cap kept them from being able to make any type of good deals.

According to the New York Post general manager, Lou Lamoriello has just about $3.6 million for the season, which in fact comes out to be around $11 million for salaries of two or three players throughout the season. Lamoriello told reporters his intentions are to be a buyer before the deadline and he is looking to acquire a first line center and maybe a defenseman.

Some suggestions Lamoriello may have in mind include: Robert Lang, the Chicago Black hawks center, who presently holds $4 million season remaining on his contract but might become available on deadline day. The unrestricted free agent Peter Forsberg also seems to be on his mind despite the fact that rumor has it many are still concerned about his reconstructed right foot.

The Flyers are still the main team interested as many others intentions have slowly but surely faded away. He has until the 26th of February to sign with a NHL team but depending on his health he will either skip this season or may even retire.

Another popular candidate up for trade is the Los Angeles Kings defenseman, Rob Blake, however he is also suffering from an ankle injury that may keep him out of the market. Not too long ago; Blake had a stress fracture in his left ankle and the Kings decided to place him on the injured reserve list for a minimum of two weeks.

Winger for the Montreal Canadians, Michael Ryder, could most likely be out for grabs as well but he might be traded before the deadline. His past season was not a very successful one as he only scored a small number of goals fact that will definitely affect his trade value.

The only sure thing is that the Devils will be in a good spot by the trade deadline in order to get a decent pick and develop a good season and we’ll just have to wait and see how this year’s picks will end up being sorted out .
