WNBA- Christon had a Great Shooting Night and Helped Liberty to beat Atlanta

At 6th place in the Eastern Conference, the New York Liberty beat Chamique Holdsclaw’s team, the Atlanta Dream, this past Sunday with a score of 89-86. The Liberty came from a loss against Washington on Saturday but after a talk between Coach Pat Coyle and star player, Shameka Christon, the Liberty came to life, with Christon scoring a career high of 32 points to help her team to beat a tough Atlanta Dream.
The Dream also came from loss, against Indiana on Friday. Their defeat by New York was their third loss of four games on the road.
From the beginning of the match, both teams traded baskets and tried to control the action on the court, but a 6-0 run by Atlanta with 2:51 left gave them the lead. However, the Liberty responded with an 8-0 run to end the first quarter with a score of 18-16 in their favor. In the second quarter, Atlanta came back and tied the came in the first minutes, but some great three point shots by Liberty gave the New York team an 11-0 run, giving it a 15 point lead at halftime.
During the third quarter, New York began to play with increased consistency and more determination than in the first half, obtaining a 20 point lead with 6:06 left. However, great runs by Holdsclaw, Ivory Latta and Iziane Castro Marquez gave Atlanta the option of cutting the lead to just 5 points. In the fourth quarter, Atlanta decided to overcome the Dream and win the match, trying to equalize the game on five occasions. But the Liberty wasn’t going down quietly; the Dream couldn’t handle the Liberty’s great offense and Christon’s final three pointer , which put the score 87-84 with 20.7 seconds on the clock. But then Little made a shot for Atlanta and left the score at 87-86; however, after a foul by Castro Marquez with 4.9 seconds left and consequently two free throws by Christon, the New York Liberty obtained the victory 89-86.
At the end of the match, Liberty player Janel McCarville applauded the great performance by her teammate Christon, hoping that the star would keep contributing for the good of the team.
“Shameka was excellent, she did everything we needed her to do today. She hit shots, she rebounded, she defended. I think she truly is a great player in this league and she's really making a name for herself," stated McCarville.
The best scorers for the New York Liberty were Christon with 32 points and 8 rebounds, Janel McCarville with 21 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists, Cathrine Kraayeveld with 14 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists, and lastly, Essence Carson with 14 points. For the Atlanta Dream, the best scorers were Holdsclaw with 26 points and 4 rebounds, Castro Marques with 24 points and 4 rebounds, Ericka Desouza with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 3 assists, and finally Latta with 11 points.
The New York Liberty’s next game will be against Chicago on July 22th; the Atlanta Dream will play against Detroit on the same day.
