Boston Wears the Champion’s Crown for the Second Time in Four Years
By Stephen Lars
The Boston Red Sox supported by the Mike Lowell's bat and another rescue of Jonathan Papelbon defeated on Sunday 4-3 to the Colorado Rockies to claimed the World Series Champions for the second time in four years.
But what was the winning formula? Get good starting pitching, outstanding work from the bullpen, show patience at the plate and grind out at-bats.
The outstanding Seth Smith was punched by Papelbon to untie the celebration of the seventh championship in the history of the franchise.
This victory was very similar to the one in 2004 where Boston marked a home run against San Luis Cardinals. Over the past ten years the Red Sox is the first team to be crowned more than once. All this after 86 years of a lack of championships popularly called ‘‘the curse of Bambino'' which Boston had as a team with the eternal loser label.
Nevertheless, the team’s history has changed drastically. The Red Sox is the second higher payroll in the major leagues (more than 143 million dollars), have become a powerful devastating machine.
Boston obtained 21 victories in their last 22 games, but that gave evidences that the eight days of rest record, affected the players’ performances. On the other hand, Colorado had a series swept record.
The Most Valuable Player Award went to the Puerto Rican Lowell, heading the offensive with a 4-2 record, with a solitary home run in the seventh inning. Bobby Kielty, batting as emerging, added another home run, which made the final difference.
Other important fact was Jon Lester’ magnificent action who replaced Tim Wakefield due to an injury in the Series. The left-handed did not allowed careers in five entrances and two thirds to be accredited the triumph in his first opening.
In the first inning, Boston struck at the outset with a fast career against the losing Aaron Cook. Jacoby Ellsbury opened with his fourth double of the series, advanced with a rolled of Dustin Pedroia and marked by means of the simple of David Ortiz by the left. This was the second continued night that the Dominican Ortiz produced the first career.
At the end, Garret Atkins’ home run against the Japanese HIdeki Okajima put the scoreboard 4-3, giving the great final victory to the Boston Red Sox.
