Veteran Andy Pettite Will Return to the Yankees in 2008
By Stephen Lars
Andy Pettite decided to stay as a New York Yankees pitcher for the 2008 season. Pettite's agent, Randy Hendricks, confirmed on Monday the 35 years old left-handed opener has contacted his teammates to report his decision. Hendricks has informed the club manager, Brian Cashman, about the news.
The agent indicated that several people spoke to Pettite in order to persuade him to continue among them Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada. They expressed to Pettite how much his return was needed.
Pettite’s decision was announced just after the Yankees set as a deadline next Monday to proceed with the exchange of Venezuelan star Johan Santana for the pitcher Phil Hughes and the Dominican central gardener Melky Cabrera.
Last month, Pettite declined a 16 million dollars option, stating he needed to take a little more time to spend with his family, as it was difficult for him to be far away for them.
After three seasons with the Houston Astros, Pettite returned to the Yankees to register a mark of 15-9 with 4,05 of effectiveness. Pettite marked a 11-3 record after the pause of the Stars Game and was the best opener of the Yankees in the playoffs, covering six entrances and a third without permitting careers in the second game of a series.
The possible New York rotation now includes: Pettite, Chien-Ming Wang, Mike Mussina, Hughes and Joba Chamberlain, while Ian Kennedy is still waiting.
New York Yankees vice-president Hank Steinbrenner said Sunday that his preference is to acquire Santana; this would very much give the Yankees an opportunity to achieve their objective to recover the East Division American League trophy, which for this season is in the hands of the Boston Red Sox.
