Gary Mathews Lawyer Talks About Steroid Allegations

By Nigel Kerry

Gary Mathews Jr’s lawyer is certain that Mathews did not break or violate any laws or Major League rules even though Mathews’ name has come up in the steroids investigation that has seen nine arrests till now.

Mathews had a breakout year with Texas and is currently in his first season with Los Angeles. It is alleged that a pharmacy had sent human growth hormone to Mathews. The Times Union of Albany was the first to disclose that Mathews along with former baseball star Jose Canseco and former heavy weight champion Evander Holyfield were customers of Applied Pharmacy Services in Mobile, Alabama.

Mathews’ lawyer Robert Shapiro said that Mathews’ had all intentions of cooperating with MLB and Los Angeles Angels in there investigations. Shapiro further added that Mathews was keen to tell his side of the story and would give a statement once all the investigations in the matter were completed.

Mathews is 32 years old and has been in the Major League for a very long time. Last year while he was with the Rangers, he made it to the All Star team. In November 2006, he signed a 5 year contract with the Angels which is worth $50 million. Mathews has a career average of .263 and his best season was last year when he averaged .313 and hit 19 homeruns with 79 RBIs.

Angels’ owner Arte Moreno recently issued a statement saying that he and the team had advised Mathews to cooperate with the authorities investigating the steroid case and the Angels had specifically expressed a view that Mathews’ should come forward and give information on the allegations that have been leveled against him. The Angels hope that the investigation in the steroid case would finish without delay.
