USA Softball wins the Gold
By Ally White
Selma’s Andrea Duran accomplished a team high 8 RBI’s and five hits for .500 batting average in this Pan American Games. She hit her fist grand slam for the women’s national team, this caused four runs to hit the base and this was the total count of races in the whole game. The USA National Team won 4-0 against Colombia. I guess we can say that she is to be awarded with the responsibility of winning the softball gold medal for the United States.
The USA National team did not play the championship game because they had already secured the first place when they beat Cuba 10-0. Besides that the heavy rains made the fields impossible to play on so the officials decided that it was not necessary for them to play another game, they were awarded champions without playing it.
Of course as Duran played a decisive roll to win the gold medal, all the girls played their part. Cat Osterman from Texas, had her first start of the tournament on the circle and she struck the first five batters she faced, on account of balls she gave up a walk to the sixth but she made it up by not allowing any other runner to hit the rest of the game.
Next up for USA softball is the September Selection Camp, where the members of the 2008 Olympic squad will be named.
