Weight Training Ideas For Basketball Players

By Michael Parker

Are you a basketball player who is looking to improve your game? Weight lifting should be one of the first places you look for trying to improve your basketball game. In this article you will find weight training for basketball exercises that will get you better at basketball.

Basketball is not only a major sport in America but it is now becoming a major sport all over the world. When you think of what basketball players need to be able to do you probably say they need to be able to jump, be quick, and be strong. To work on jumping you need to do different leg exercises, to be quick you need to work on quickness drills, and to be strong you need to work on your arms. Here are some weight training for basketball lifts you can do to improve those areas:

To improve your jumping you should go straight to calf raises, leg press, squats, squat jumps, box jumps, etc. All of these exercises will build your leg muscles up and help you to increase your vertical jump. If you are looking to jump higher work hard on calf raises, squats, leg press, and squat jumps. If you are looking to jump high faster you should work on squat jumps and box jumps and really work on getting off the floor as quickly as possible.

To improve your quickness you can do many different box exercises. Some of the box exercises are two on two off, which is where you jump with both feet onto the box and both feet off, double tap, which is where you have one foot on the box and you tap your foot twice and then switch feet double tapping the foot again, or lunges, which is where you do a lunge from one side of the box to another but work on speed rather than stretching.

To improve your strength you just need to get in the weight room. Depending on the position you play in basketball strength could be the one thing you really need to work on. By just doing simple bench press, incline bench press, dumbbell curls, push-ups, anything to work the upper body, you will get the strength you need to hold your own in games.

Many people do not believe that basketball requires that much strength but they are wrong. Wether it be boxing out for a rebound, getting in position to get the ball, etc., basketball does require a certain amount of strength.

If you add strength, quickness, and a higher jumping ability to your basketball game you should see enormous improvement in your play. By doing some of these basic weight training for basketball lifts you should be on your way to a better game.
