The Tigers Take Advantage of the Injured Yankees

By: Cindy Ferguson

There’s nothing like eating a stale hot dog at the stadium and watching some good old baseball to relax especially if your team pulls a nice one and breaks a record.

It’s been awhile since the Detroit Tigers have had a three game sweep at the Yankee’s stadium; in fact the last time was back in 1966, but more recently the Tigers decided to take advantage of the Yankee’s unfortunate injuries and they sure did. Even team manager admitted it’s not something common to see as you are lucky enough if you win at least one. So Leyland and his team are quite satisfied but hopefully that won’t make them lose their heads.

Last Thursday night they beat the New York Yankees 8-4 with the help of Miguel Cabrera who homered, tripled and drove in three runs for his team. Ramon Santiago also put in his share by making a necessary defensive play and hitting a tiebreaking triple to Nate Robertson.

Magglio Ordonez also added three hits that included a two run double off of Ian Kennedy and scored twice making it their eight win in a number of ten games.

Although; Leyland admits the team has a long way to go he does feel they have improved greatly and at least they have somehow an advantage and still have time to better their play, but the worst maybe yet to come and you can never count your chickens before they hatch.

As for the Yankees go, they have not gotten off to a good start this season and are not going thru very good times at the moment. They have lost six out of eight games and were just informed that Phil Hughes will be out for at least another couple of months due to a stress fracture in his ribs.

Alex Rodriguez and Jorge Posada are also warming up the bench with injuries and no announcements have been made as to how long they will be out but what is certain is that the Yankees situation has definitely put a lot of pressure on the team; as they feel the need to be prefect which is almost impossible to do. Right now; they just hope their team recovers and gets back on track as soon as possible before they hit a road with no turn around and will be unable to make up their losses.

When most of your key players are out it surely puts a load on the rest and although the team is confident, other clubs are and will take a gain in any way they can, especially if you are up against the Yanks.

The New York Yankees will now have to visit the Tigers in Detroit from May the 9th thru May the 11th and who knows what the outcome of that will be. If the Yankees streak of injuries continues they may just end up losing being that the Tigers will already have the advantage of being at home along with this sweep.
