Over Worked?
By Jonathan T Chin
Imagine watching the NBA finals and seeing Lebron James take the basketball to the hoop for a royal flush. He runs down the floor on defense breathing heavily and seems tired. Is the king really tired? How can that be? Aren't all athletes in top physical condition? Well, they are, but some are just carrying too much. Some players like Lebron James have to play almost the entire game to give his team a chance to win. If Lebron steps off the court, there is a lack of leadership and play from the other players. They depend on Lebron and are like children playing without a supervisor.
If you are Lebron, you are in a tough situation. You do not want to let your teammates down and playing more minutes will be better for you. However, you are really tired and you cannot remember the last time you have a break. Stop and take a moment to relax. This is not smart basketball.
If you are a coach, you should understand how long a player should play every game. They cannot overwork themselves because being overworked leads to problems in the future and can render a player useless. This is why players other than Lebron have to step it up. If they have to depend on the work of only one player, it can be hard. If the players that help Lebron are able to play well without him, there will be less pressure on Lebron and on everyone else. This is why a good team plays well with anyone on the team.
Lebron will still probably have to play a large part of the game, but the minutes should not exceed 40 in every game. In those other 8 or so minutes, he should be allowed a breather and a chance to see his teammates work. This will benefit Lebron’s health and will help when his team has to play without him. Remember, a player does not make up the entire team.
