WNBA awards given to Price and Hughes
By Cindy Ferguson
Armintie Price, guard for the Chicago Sky, received the WNBA Rookie of the Year Award on Saturday while Dan Hughes from the San Antonio Silvers Stars was awarded as Coach of the Year for the league.
Price, of 22 years of age, was drafted as the third overall pick from Mississippi and started all 34 of the team’s games finishing third among the first year players and scored a total of 7.9 points per game along with 2.9 assists a game.
The Chicago Sky feel that its improvement has much to do with the Price’s performance being that the team advanced from five wins in season 2006 to fourteen wins this past season. In total Price received a number 30 votes counted towards his award.
Hughes helped the Silver Stars win seven more games in 2007 than the previous year, thanks to his excellent coaching knowledge that has also allowed him to become the second coach in the leagues history to be named coach of the year award on more than one occasion.
Hughes received twenty votes out beating Paul Westhead, Phoenix’s coach, by six votes.
