Phoenix wins WNBA crown

The Phoenix Mercury beated the Detroit Shock on Sunday 108-92 and got their first WNBA title in the 11 years of history in the deciding Game 5 for the Championship Series.
This is the second year for Cappie Pondexter in the WNBA league. She scored 26 points and was chosen as the year MVP’s; "It's been a long time coming," Pondexter said. "It's something I've been waiting for, working hard for, and it's finally here."
The Detroit Shock lost the last 2 games for the Championship Series. "This is an unfamiliar position -- being up here without a bottle of champagne," Detroit coach Bill Laimbeer said as he opened his post-game news conference. "We got beat by a team that was hungrier." Detroit also won the title on 2003.
Phoenix took some screaming out of the home crowd, announced at more than 22,000, by jumping to a 20-9 lead midway during the first quarter.
Taurasi had eight points, including two 3-pointers, in that stretch. "We were due for a great game," Taurasi said. "Everything we focused on all season kind of came into play."
The Mercury led by 18 points in the second quarter and then led 55-43 for the halftime. The teams set a finals scoring record for combined points in a half.
After the victory celebration, Mercury’s coach Paul Westhead, who won an NBA title as the L.A. Lakers coach in 1980 said: "My players 27 years ago didn't worry about spraying me (with champagne). Today, everyone was gunning for me.” “The early start was crucial,” he added, "We put ourselves in a great position” “You're hard to beat scoring like that.”
