By Ally White
The current fifth place of the Western Conference, Los Angeles Sparks, beat the Seattle Storm in the Staples Center this past Sunday 82-55. This win means a revenge for the Sparks, who lost against Seattle last Friday with a score 67-69.
The Sparks were focus on literally “killing” the Storm in the second match of the weekend, and they really did after winning by 27 points without two of their best players, Candice Parker and Lisa Leslie. Moreover, the main reason for the Sparks’ success during the game was stopping Lauren Jackson and holding her to just 9 points. This triumph was the third for the Seattle team in the season.
Since the beginning of the game, both teams were in control of the actions, ending the first quarter with a score of 17-15 in favor of Seattle. However, a great run from the Sparks of 13-0 with 5:49, gave Los Angeles the lead of 8 points. Seattle tried to cut the lead but two great shots of Ferdinand closing the quarter, gave the Sparks a lead of 11 points at half time.
At the beginning of the second half, the Sparks fight to extend their lead whereas Seattle was trying to cut it, but Los Angeles answered each time with great shots. With all that been said, a more dominant team of Sparks put the score at the end of the third quarter 67-45. In the last quarter, things looked even harder for the Storm, who couldn’t find their game strategy and with too many turnovers; the Sparks took advantage and extended their lead to win the game 82-55.
It had to be mentioned that the Sparks made history by recording a season-high by making 19 free throws and also added a season-high of 23 assists. Moreover, Los Angeles held the Storm to a season-low in points and forced them to a season-high of 22 turnovers, which show the great defense the Sparks did in the game.
At the end of the game, Lauren Jackson expressed her disappointment for losing like that and stated it wasn’t a good moment for their team, who lost their confidence and desire at one point of the game. Jackson also praised the great work of L.A, who worked extremely hard during the whole game.
"I think L.A. came out with the focus to stop me from scoring, which they did successfully. (Sparks coach Michael Cooper) obviously scouted me to a T. Give credit to them. They just played a great game. Obviously, it's embarrassing losing by 30. But it's early in the season," said Australian Lauren Jackson, the start of the Storm.
During this game, the best scorers for Los Angeles Sparks were Marie Ferdinand-Harris with 15 points, Betty Lennox with 14 points and 4 rebounds, Vanessa Hayden with 12 points and 4 rebounds, Delisha Milton-Jones with 11 points, 3 rebounds and three assists, and finally Noelle Quinn with 10 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists. On the other hand, the best scorers for the Seattle Storm were Lauren Jackson with 9 points and 4 rebounds, Camille Little with 9 points and 4 rebounds, Katie Gearlds with 8 points and 2 assists, and lastly Sue Bird with 7 points and 2 assists.
