Boxing: Maccarinelli Finally Set to Challenge Nelson

Welshman Enzo Maccarinelli will finally get the chance to challenge Sheffield veteran Johnny Nelson for his WBO cruiserweight title on March 4.

By Guardian Newspapers

A long-awaited clash between the Sheffield veteran Johnny Nelson and the Welshman Enzo Maccarinelli for the World Boxing Organisation cruiserweight title will be the principle support at Manchester's MEN Arena on March 4 for the super-middleweight unification fight between Joe Calzaghe and Jeff Lacy.

Nelson, who will be 39 by the time of the contest, has not lost a fight since 1995 and will be making a 14th defence of the title he won by stopping Carl Thompson in 1999. He said: "Enzo's one of the most exciting prospects in the division but I'm afraid it will all end in tears for him. He's a hungry young kid who fancies his chances but his eagerness will be his downfall. It will be man against boy, master against student. He must realise that in my time I have mixed and dealt with a better, harder and more experienced class of opponent than he has ever faced."

The big-punching Maccarinelli, 25, has been chasing a showdown with Nelson for more than two years. "I know I can knock him clean out," he said. "He has always backed off from fighting me and has come up with excuses that I'm not experienced enough and that he could knock me out. He's been a good champion and he's a nice fella. But this is business and I am going to knock him into retirement."
