Cantwell’s Sense of Loyalty Could Finally Pay Off

by Ally White

Login tell us that some college football team would surely like a quarterback that threw more than 7,000 yards during his high school career, this is what Hunter Cantwell did in Paducah Tilghman. And although he waited by the phone the promising call never came. After that he decided to walk on at Louisville in 2004 even though he knew that Brian Brohm would project a shadow that was going to be hard to get out of.

The decision turned out to be the correct one since two years later after Brohm had two significant injuries, Cantwell finds himself leading one of the nation's most potent offenses in college. Brohm will miss the next month after hurting his throwing hand leaving it up to Cantwell to keep Louisville's national championship hopes alive. But we don’t have to worry, it is a challenge Cantwell says is prepared for, thanks in part to the playing time he received when Brohm injured his right knee last November.

Of course it was a lot easier coming in this time than it was in the Gator Bowl when he threw for 113 yards and a touchdown against the Hurricanes. He came away from that game thinking he took something away from the team and the University of Louisville, and it must’ve felt good to go out there and give something back.

What helped Cantwell decide to stay at Louisville rather than seek a transfer was that sense of duty, even though he knew the starting job would be Brohm's as soon as he fully recovered from knee surgery. But he got a confidence boost from Coach Bobby Petrino shortly after. Also, that sense of appreciation you do not see much now a days among college players who are just looking to show off for a gig on the NFL.
