Keller Out of The Season
By Audrey Nolan
The Nebraska Huskers will have to replace their quarterback Sam Keller as he will be out of the season due to a shoulder injury, and he will be replaced by Joe Ganz who will start this week against Kansas.
This is the second time Keller leaves the season before its ending, coach Bill Callahan didn’t specify what kind of injury was Keller’s but he was troubled by it last Saturday on the game against Texas when he was hit by the defensive end Eddie Jones.
Callahan also said their linebacker Lance Brandenburgh; also suffered a shoulder injury against the Longhorns, and will be out of season too.
Keller was transferred from Arizona State last year and gained the starting position over Ganz in the pre-season practice. He completed 63.1 percent of his passes for 2,422 yards and 14 touchdowns. He was intercepted 10 times.
We couldn't be more pleased with everything he's done for us," Callahan said during a teleconference with reporters, "just his ability to come in as a transfer student and be a player who earned the respect of his teammates. "He's had ups and downs. I'm appreciative of his efforts. He's a good kid, a classy individual. He was a real leader for us during some troubled times'' he said.
On the other hand; Ganz is a very good player, he played three games during the season. He completed 2 of 3 passes against Texas, including a 4-yarder for a touchdown to Maurice Purify. He also converted on a 2-point pass to Nate Swift.
Keller has had a college career full of highs and lows. He started the 2004 season with Arizona State and his first game was the Sun Bowl against Purdue. He threw for 370 yards and three touchdowns and was named the game's most valuable player. In the 2005 season; he started throwing 2.165 yards and 20 touchdowns, but he ended the season early with a thumb injury in the game against Oregon.
With one year left of eligibility, he decided to take the transfer to Nebraska were he had great accomplishments. "I have respect and admiration for him as a person and competitor," Callahan said. "This hurts us, but it also creates an opportunity for Joe Ganz to step up."
