Giro d'Italia Weekend Review

By Julie Smith

The Italian Alessandro Petacchi and the Norwegian Kurt Arvesen were the protagonists of this weekend in two different stages regarding altimetry. The 7th stage, a flat course special for sprinters gave the Italian the second victory of the week on a tight finish in which he beat Thor Hushovd as well as World Champion Paolo Bettini placing himself in the run for the point’s jersey.

The Milram rider completed the 158 mile course (the longest of the 21 leg race) in 6 hours, 14 minutes, 44 seconds; one of the longest races he has ever won. Nobody doubts Petacchi’s capacity as a sprinter, if he can keep up the consistent work and make it through the mountains, he'll take the points jersey with ease.

The 8th leg was described as a medium climbing stage, with opportunities for climbers to escape during the first minutes of the race. Effectively, an action with 22 men began 30 km from the start and the attackers found a good pace to reach the finish line with an advantage of 4’19”.

The Norwegian from the CSC team, Kurt-Asle Arvesen obtained the victory in a spectacular finish at the Ferrari test track in Modena. Arvesen, 1997 Amateur World Champion and 2003 winner of one stage of the Giro beat the World Champion Bettini in his own house.

After the first week of action; the Italian Marco Pinotti of T-Mobile retain the overall leader's pink jersey giving the Italian fans more reasons to stand out from their houses and watch the cycling caravan.
