Discovery Channel Glorious at the Tour of Missouri

By Julie Smith

George Hincapie from the Discovery won the second stage of 125.6 miles from Clinton to Springfield last Wednesday to take the lead of the Tour of Missouri. The American, who was Lance Armstrong teammate during the best part of his career (seven Tour the France titles), is one of the favorites to win the North American race.

Some cyclists from the peloton were not as lucky as Hincapie during the second stage; since they were critically affected for an accident caused by an armadillo that jumped straight to the wheels of the bikes when the caravan was passing through. Dan Schmatz from the BMC team actually had to leave the race due to an important injury in his collarbone.

The race that started on Tuesday in Kansas City will conclude on Sunday in St Louis where the cyclist will have already 600 miles in their legs. It will be an historical end in a race for the Discovery Channel since the company Tailwind Sports, who managed the team, have already decided to disband the team at the end of the season which means that the Tour of Missouri will be the last race in the United States for the admired Discovery squad.

So far up to the fourth stage, the Discovery’s good bye has been glorious with Leipheimer winning the time trial and George Hincapie as a general leader. There are three stages left; Friday’s stage will be the longest with 133 miles from Lebanon to Columbia. Hopefully, the Discovery will keep the lead to demonstrate once again and for the last time its supremacy in professional cycling.
