Opening Sunday of the 2007 NFL Season - A Better Christmas

By Matt Robison

It’s close to that time of year again. When all men everywhere make a collective run from church to the nearest TV, or snap awake Sunday late-morning, brimming with excitement. Couches and chairs will find their edges used more than is typical. Wives and girlfriends will sigh and roll their eyes.

The rush from March Madness is over, and the baseball season is about to gear up for the run to the World Series. This is a gray void that is filled with a gluttonous feast on the Sunday when the NFL Season starts with a bang in 2007.

For me, I compare the alternate feelings of anticipation and then “fulfillment of anticipation”, to the feelings of Christmas mornings when I was younger. Except now I don’t have to give up any of my favorite cookies to that jerk Santa Claus. So I prefer to call the opening Sunday of the NFL season, the "Day That Gives a Better Christmas-y Feel than Christmas Itself".

There are always some specifics items that I’m excited about. Last year I wondered how Drew Brees would do with the Saints, how Phillip Rivers would do in Brees’ absence with the Chargers, and when would Bill Parcells wrap his hands around Terrell Owens’ neck and strangle the life out of him.

Here are my general questions for this upcoming season:

  • Can the Saints keep the bar high after last year’s stellar season? I hope so. They're fun to watch.

  • How will the Titans handle the loss of their best offensive weapon, Pacman Jones (I know he’s a cornerback)? Will Vince Young be able to take on the pressure?

  • Will Brady Quinn have enough strength to push Cleveland out of its pit, even eventually? I’m guessing…no.

  • Will the 49s finally break .500? Fingers crossed.

  • Will this year’s playoffs be as exciting as the Saints underdog run? Don't hold your breath.

  • Will the Super Bowl be as depressingly boring as last year’s?

  • Will Randy Moss do his part to rip asunder the Patriot’s team cohesiveness? That would sure be entertaining.

  • Will the Charger’s ever win a playoff game, now that they’ve downgraded their head coach? What a class-act move.

The most important question I have, however, is:

- Will Michael Vick volunteer at the Humane Society? Because he certainly won’t be playing football anytime soon.

I’ll be watching eagerly this 2007 NFL season. I hope you will be too.
