Kansas City Running Back Holmes Announces Retirement

By: Jane Richy

Priest Holmes had to quit his passion due to an injury in his spinal column, one of the most dangerous in the sports, it could leave anyone unable to walk. Texan Priest Holmes, 34 years old, started his NFL career back in 1997 with the Baltimore Ravens before he joined Kansas City and reached the Pro Bowl on each of the 3 seasons he played with the Chiefs, in 2003 he made a single season record with 27 touchdowns.

During the 2005 season he got injured from a tackle by Shawne Merriman, and he was replaced; the time passed and his injury did not heal… therefore by the end of 2006 he was placed between the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list in the Kansas City Chiefs. He expressed his desire of coming back to the NFL for a couple of more seasons though he did not want to force his body to the extremes.

The injury is known and feared by football players and it is produced by a violent endeavor. "I try not to think about the dangers of the game. I understand what they are. I know they're there. And no man really wants to go out of the game with an injury. But we chose this job and take those risks. That's just part of it” said Holmes’ teammate Eddie Kennison. Holmes was absent from the NFL for two years because of his suffering, returned last October and rejoined the team in the training camp but was in the PUP for while until he was back in shape. He caused some impact during his first two games in the games against Oakland and Green Bay.

Holmes said good bye to his team last Wednesday November 21st after he hurt his neck during a game the previous Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts, he left memories as records for rushing attempts, career rushing yards, career rushing touchdowns and total touchdowns.

Regarding his health conditions now, he wasn’t very specific though the press had expressed paralysis was a possibility and that was the main reason that made him quit. He said “Much of that is, I guess you could say, in the past," (…) "Just to know the symptoms were similar to the ones before. But to be technical, to go into medical terms, I wouldn't feel comfortable."

Holmes showed himself very grateful with the league and his team from which he was the all time rushing leader he said have truly been blessed with the opportunity to play in the National Football League," (…) "I will be forever grateful to the Hunt family and the Chiefs organization for the opportunity to come to Kansas City, where the community embraced me from Day 1."
