Free Golf Instruction - How to Putt Like Crazy in Less Than 10 Minutes
By Paul Macleod
Oh NO !!!!
I have a two foot putt for birdie .. and I know I can't make it.
It breaks left to right, but how much? Oh NO !! I know I can't make it!
If I do make it I will beat that SOB for the first time ever. I know I can't make it !! Oh NO !
I will just take another look at the break. It is about 2 inches outside the cup..oh no! ( crying sounds)
I will aim there. ( making sounds of hope)
Just nudge it toward the left and hope the grain doesn't move it much. Jeez, is it up hill ? Yes ! Damn!
I know I can't make this putt. Maybe I'll just fake a faint. Fall down, and be done with the whole thing.
Crap! I have to putt it, what will they think if I don't? Crap!
Ok here I go, Just hit it hard enough to get it there.
I did! And, yes, I missed!
SO WHAT!!! ( Making sounds of mad as hell )
Have you ever experienced this? Or maybe something close ? Who hasn't?
It sucks!
So what's up with all that?
Time for golf instruction ?
Here's the deal. Almost everyone who plays golf has made a long death defying putt, halfway across the green or has strolled up to a lengthy putt and out of frustration just stabbed the ball one handed and it went in. Right?
These putts go in from time to time for a couple of reasons, but one of the reasons you can control.
It's called " trying less"
If you have a great routine, and know how much you should try to make all putts you will be a far better putter than you are now.
Does that sound funny? Try Less !
Most golf instruction and all golf lessons focus on technique when dealing with putting. There definitely needs to be some repeatable technique. But, as you know, there is no place on the golf course where your mind plays a more important role, than on the greens.
Putt for dough.
So.. with out further adieu here is a quick and easy routine designed to give you a repeatable level confidence and a quick drill to find out how much you should be trying.
Here is the routine: stand behind the ball and look at the line to the hole. Close your eyes and see the line in your head. Watch for the break and the slope. Now stand up if you were kneeling. And continue to look at the target line to the hole.
While doing this make several practice strokes with your normal stroke. Do not look at the ground or the ball. Continue to look at the hole. You are still standing behind the ball. Do this twice.
Now move to the ball. And get into your setup. Make several practice strokes again. And do not look at the ball, look at the hole. Never look at the ball. Look at the hole. Got it?
You may ask why. Ok Good question.
Your brain is smarter than you are! It will calculate for you how hard or easy you must hit the ball given the distance and the slope it sees if you allow your brain to see it.
So allow your brain to do it's work. Then putt the damn thing into the hole. Always try to make the putt.
If you are lagging you are practicing how to miss. Bad idea. Let your brain do it's work!
Oh in case you wondered. This is the routine that Tiger Woods uses. He uses it because it works. And because of it ( or partly) he is considered on of the best putters ever. Good model to copy ?
Now.. the drill for trying less. Take a bunch of ball to the practice green and place them all around the hole at about 10 feet.
Putt them all to the hole in this sequence. On the first one, try as hard as you can to make the putt, I do mean hard. Make it a game in your head. Line it up as if it means the world to you try very very hard to make this putt.
On the second putt, try a bit less. You will know how much it is. Let your brain work.
And keep doing this until you find the point where you are either making more putts or coming closer more and more often.
This is your own level of trying. Do this often and soon you will automatically try the right amount.
This information comes from Dr. Bob Rotella, a noted sports psychologist. He has worked with many outstanding PGA players over the years with great success.
Now a bit on technique. There is only two things that really matter here. Golf instruction tells us always to make sure the putter blade is square to the target line and remains square through impact and that you make near perfect contact with the sweet spot of your putter.
And that you minimize your movement, particularly your head and shoulders, it is hard to do. But you must not move until the ball is away toward the target.
Do these things on the practice green as often as you have time for and very very soon your putting will be absolutely outstanding.
