Who will master the Masters

By: Chancer

The annual gladitorial battle we all know and love as ‘ The Masters’ returns to our screens later in the week. Augusta probably the prettiest golf course in the world, will hold the millionaire golfing prizefighters within its much loved ropes. Although the course itself always looks superb on my television set, the golf itself can be at either end of the scale.

Over the years we have had amazing collapses, magnificent charges, unbelievable chip ins and long putts sunk and the odd fluff, top and shank. The shank a shot I actually believed was missing from the Pro’s artillery, until Ian Poulter and many years before Greg Norman disproved this theory. Who would have thought that Seve with the Masters all but won could hit a full top with a fairway wood into the water at the famed 15th hole and disappear without trace from the leaderboard.

And still the excitement lives on, who will win this year, will it be one of golf’s superstar top six (probably) and can anyone beat Tiger (probably not). His game is the best suited for playing this great course, he has it all, the supreme length and also the gentle finesse around the greens.

Could Ernie show his talent to its full effect, he has not won the number of majors that he should and this year might be the year he makes amends. Certainly he possesses the abilities required to bring the Green Jacket back to his Wentworth home.
What about his fellow countryman Retief Goosen (my personal favourite for this years title) he too owns scorching tee shots, great iron play and an almost god like ability with the putter.

Not to forget the American man in the street number one pick Lefty Phil Mickelson will he manage to recapture the first major he won.

Jim Furyk the man with the crazy backswing and laser quality iron play or the giant Fijian Vijay who challenges Hogan in the amount he practises, to very good effect I may add.

Or will this be the year another European steps up to the plate, to take possession of the prize held so often in the past this side of ’ the Pond’.

Whoever triumphs over the next week in the battle for the Green Jacket there will be two sure fire winners Golf and the watching public.
