By Jane Richy
Des Moines Buccaneer‘s defenseman Jeff Petry has been named the 2007 USA Hockey Junior Player and Jeff Lerg, Spartans goaltender, the USA's Hockey's college player of the year. Both will be honored at an award banquet tabbed “A Night of Tribute” in the 2007 USA Hockey Annual Congress next June 6th in the Sheraton Hotel in Colorado.
Petry native from Farmington Hills Michigan, spent tree years playing college hockey at Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, now is playing the second season for the Buccaneers; he had 18 goals and 27 assists in 55 games for this team in 2006 and 2007. This is the second consecutive year that the Buccaneers win this award; last year was earned by Trevor Lewis. Des Moines general manager Regg Simon said that “his development over the past two seasons has been outstanding...”
Jeff Lerg playing for the Omaha Lancers (USHL) helped lead Michigan State to the NCAA Division I men's ice hockey national championship this season for the first time since 1986. Lerg played in the 42 games for Michigan State in 2006 and 2007 and posted a 26-13-3 record. The sophomore was probably at his best in the NCAA Tournament. The sophomore was named NCAA Midwest Regional Most Valuable Player.
