Curlin wins Breeders’ Cup
By Audrey Nolan
Curlin the amazing horse, won the USD 5 million Breeders’ Cup Race against all of the top horses including the winner of the Kentucky Derby which was also defeated for the second time. With a definitive victory on Sunday, Curlin ran with the Horse of the Year honors during a great championship season.
"He showed he's a true champion," Curlin jockey Robby Albarado said. "He's an amazing horse."
The Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense and his jockey Calvin Borel, tried to catch Curlin but it was impossible for them at the Monmouth Park race track. Then Curlin run over Hard Spun and won by 4 and a half lengths.
"Curlin is the genuine article," Borel said after Street Sense finished fourth in the final race of his career. "I just couldn't go with him."
He's a big-day horse," winning trainer Steve Asmussen said. "He settled calmly and waited for what was going to happen."
Curlin not only won over Lawyer Ron again, he won over the Haskell Invitational; winner Any Given Saturday and his other 3 years rivals Hard Spun and Tiago.
Also; the European Star George Washington was euthanized after he broke down when he shattered his right front leg, while Curlin was crossing the finish line, the 4-year-old colt was put down by the trainer’s request Aidan O’Brien; jockey Mick Kinane was injured and held the reins while he was helped to walk away.
"He had a fracture in his ankle and dislocated his ankle. That's a hopeless injury," said Larry Bramlage, the track's on-call veterinarian. "The trainer requested that he immediately be euthanized."
This is the second year something like it happens in the Breeders’ Cup. Last year Pine Island was euthanized and Fleet Indian had an injury that ended up his career. For Street Sense, the loss was very difficult since it was his last race of his career.
"I had no excuse. I had nothing but race track in front of me," Borel said. "We just got outrun. I'm sad to see him go, but he's going off to be a dad now."
Steve Asmussen, one of the nation's leading trainers, adds his first Classic win to his first win in a Triple Crown race. The trainer has been impressed with every step Curlin has taken, even after he finished a dull third in the Haskell at Monmouth in August.
