Borel wins Kentucky Derby
By Audrey Nolan
Jockey Calvin Borel won the Kentucky Derby on Saturday aboard Street Sense. He followed his instincts and moved from next -to- last with a lot of velocity to win the Kentucky Derby. As the field turned to home the colt blew, passing one horse after another on the rail, then went wide to squeeze and passed Hard Spun, his final challenger.
The victory is the first for the 40-year-old jockey in five Derby tries on a Triple Crown race. "I knew I had the ability, it was just finding the horse to get me there," Borel said. And he certainly did it.
He found the correct horse last summer, guiding Street Sense to a record 10-length win in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile and another victory this spring in the Tampa Bay Derby. "He'll do anything for you," Borel said. "He's very push-button. I really don't know how good he is because he always gives me something when I ask."
Borel still wakes up at 5am in the morning and starts his training. He began racing on the bush tracks at age 8, in front of around a hundred spectators, near his hometown of St. Martinville, La., collecting a few dollars here or there.
Once he crossed the finish line on Saturday, he lifted his right arm up and offered his five, and then congratulated the other contenders. After that and before heading back to the winners circle, he just took a sponge and gave Street Sense a victory bath.
With Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip watching, Borel proved he, too, belonged among his sport's elite.
