Belmont Stakes – Hard Spuns & Street Sense

By Jane Richy

Next Saturday June 9th the Belmont Stakes will take place in New York and Hard Spun and Street Sence are definitely the two most thrilling horses of the generation.

Hard Spun’s owner Rick Porter and Larry Jones his trainer found a new jockey for him, Mario Pino who has been considered a key to the colt’s development, was changed instead of the veteran Garrett Gomez. Jones said it was a very tough decision for him because he is close to Pino “It’s one – race deal, and it’s not to say that Mario won’t be back on Hard Spun later”.

Meanwhile Carl Nafzger, Street Sense’s trainer said that instead of seeking the third round in the Triple Crown, they will take him to the Travel Stakes and the Breeders Cup Classic this year. Nafzger and the colt’s trainer James Tafel discussed it deeply before making that choice, but since winning the Triple Crown was out of the question, they decided to let it rest for those other two competitions.

These two horses are so valuable that Sherikh Mohammed has bought the breeding rights to Street Sense and Hard Spun he said that “They’ve achieved so much, and impressed so much, both in victory and also in defeat. It will be an enormous privilege to take charge of their stud careers. They are both so deeply talented that it’s easy to see how they could each leave a lasting impression on the breed.”
