McConvilled Favored on the Hurling Awards

By Ally White

Oisin McConville the shooter for Crossmanglen Rangers had a great boost on Sunday's AIB All Ireland Club football semi-final than a coveted Provincial Player Award. McConville was awarded with the outstanding player in the recent Ulster Club Championship. A well due honor given his vast displays with his team while they where aiming their provincial accolade

McConville had to face some fierce opponents such as Conleith Gilligan but his sure aim had him meet the challenge. Now Oisin will lead the Rangers against St Brigid's determined to enhance his stunning personal scoring record, but even more determined that Crossmaglen should win the game.

Although he hints that this could be his last year in the Armagh county squad, his eagerness for club action remains the same or even more so now that he will have captained the club in a match of such magnitude. McConville, who was a previous AIB Provincial Player Award winner in 1996 and 1999, is one of eight award winners.

The Rangers head is joined in the honors lists by fellow football semi-finalists Ronan Sweeney (Moorefield), Mark O'Carroll (St Brigid's) and Colm 'Gooch' Cooper (Dr Crokes), all of whom will be first-time recipients of the awards. Awards also go to defeated hurling semi-finalists John O'Brien (Toomevara) and Karl McKeegan (Cushendall).

Into the AIB All Ireland Hurling semi-final McKeegan was outstanding for Cushendall, where they were defeated by Loughrea. Loughrea's Johnny O'Loughlin was the unanimous winner of the Connacht award, while James 'Cha' Fitzpatrick managed to overcome the competition from within his own club and he took the award for Leinster.
