Annual Salute to Women in Sports

The Women’s Sports Foundation’s 28th Annual Salute to Women in Sports was celebrated last Monday to award the most courageous and devoted athletes who in addition have had and extraordinary season. The woman’s of the year in individual and team category were selected via internet by 9400 sports fans.
The professional golfer Lorena Ochoa (individual) and Monica Abbot from the USA Softball National Team (team) along with figure skater Michelle Kwan and the Rutgers women’s basketball were the favorites on the online selection.
In the season 2006-2007 Abbott registered a national 50-5 record, a 0.68 ERA, 29 shutouts and 724 strikeouts to achieve the record ever in a single NCAA Division season of softball. On the other hand the Mexican star Ochoa overtook Annika Sorenstam as the top-ranked golfer this season and won her seventh tournament with record earnings of 3.3 million dollars this year.
Also, Michelle Kwan was honored as the most decorated figure skater in U.S. history and for this merit she received the Billie Jean King Contribution Award winner while the Rutgers players earned the Wilma Rudolph Courage Award for being an inspiration for other young athletes.
