Tampa Bay Rises in the Eastern Conference After Winning Streak
By Stephen Lars
This past Sunday the Dominican batter Carlos Peña managed a pass with the full bases in the tenth inning giving the Tampa Bay Rays the victory over the Detroit Tigers in the Major League with a final score of 6-5.
With this victory the Tampa team ascended in the American League Eastern Conference top position with a record of 66-44 plus three games ahead of the Red Sox and five and half of the Yankees which finished the day also with a victory.
The game concluded basically with Peña’s hit, which forced the run while on the other hand Gary Sheffield, Curtis Grandenson and the Venezuelan Miguel Cabrera were some of the Detroit Tigers that managed to score a home run.
Other important MLB games to mention were that in Boston where a triple hit from Jed Lowrie and two simples of the Canadian Jason Bay, as well as solid pitching from the Japanese Daisuke Matsuzaka, gave the victory of 5-2 to the Red Sox against the Oakland Athletics.
The first base Kevin Youkilis connected two hits and forced a run while Coco Crisp did a pair of hits for the Red Sox. Matsuzaka (12-2) scored two runs and four hits in six innings.
Always in the East Coast in New York the Yankees also managed the victory after defeating the Los Angeles Angels 14-9 with six scores and home runs in the eighth inning by the Puerto Ricans Iván Rodriguez and Xavier Nady.
It was a thriller game as the Yankees recovered two times from an adverse scoreboard (5-0 and 9-8), this last one in the eighth inning. The Yankees took advantage of the four errors of the Angels, besides the home runs of Rodriguez and Nady. During that inning there were also other errors made by the Dominican Erick Aybar and the third base Jeff Mathis which were harmful for the rival team while the New York squad smartly enough snatched the victory.
In the meantime in Atlanta, the Mexican launcher Jorge Campillo managed seven solid innings and the Braves were able to win over the Brewers 5-0. Campillo (6-4) allowed only six shots and did not grant any pass, besides giving six punches. The Cuban Yunel Escobar produced two runs while Kelly Johnson added a double and a simple for Atlanta.
And finally there was additional action in a more central city in Minneapolis; the Dominican launcher Francisco Liriano produced six solid episodes leading the Twins to a victory of 6-2 over the Indians. Liriano (1-3) launched three hits and received five punches, performing his fourth opening after returning from a surgical intervention. He has come a long way as in early April the Dominican had a disastrous start and a poor run average of 11.32, which almost cost him to descend to the Minors.
