No new track in Kitsap
By Cindy Ferguson
Washington NASCAR fans are going to have to wait for a racetrack after the falling of the Kitsap County suggestion due to rigid oppositions and conflicts from the local officials and state legislature.
NASCAR had in mind building a $368 million racetrack in which taxpayers would have had to pay for half of the facility, the ISC supplying $180 million of the total cost and the states split would have been compensated through bonds. Also, the company stated it would take responsibility for any cost overruns.
The interest in Larry Santiago, spokesman for the International Speedway Corp., of building a track in Kitsap County is due to his belief that the ISC has built a significant supporter base in the area including the fact that Washington is residence to several motor sports fans, although some attended to hearings against the idea stating problems with pollution and traffic amongst others. In addition it is an opportunity for the company’s enlargement.
Some of the citations made to influence the legislation in helping with the finance of the track were that it would enhance the states economy and offer many job openings. However, that and the presence of former NASCAR champions was not enough to encourage the state government in using municipal funds for the investment of such track.
Santiago and the ISC still look forward to moving NASCAR into the Pacific Northwest but have not made any comments or public announcements in regards to another possible location.
