The head of Nascar is gone
By Jill Woods
One of the biggest auto-racing magnates, who followed his family tradition in this kind of business and created a super millionaire enterprise, William C. France Jr., died on June 4th at the age of 74.
The business man played an important role in the Nascar industry, becoming the vice chairman in this category as well as the chairman of the International Speedway Corporation.
After his withdraw in 1972, his son, Henry Getty France became the head of Nascar, which is considered the most important U.S auto-racing organization. William delegated the chief executive officer and chairman position of Nascar to his son Brian France in 2003.
Between the people that really admired him, is good to mention Jon Ackley, a Virginia Commonwealth University professor who teaches a course in the Nascar business, who believes the relationship between technology and making the race more open to the fans is perhaps the biggest contribution William could have left as a legacy.
The cause of France’s death is unknown, dying after 1:00pm New York time at his home located in Daytona Beach, Florida, at the same time the Nextel Cup was being run in Dover, Delaware.
The head of Nascar was not only known due to his family legacy and their long way in the sport, but also as he had been ranked in the world’s richest people for 2006. On May 4th he was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in Talladega, Alabama.
William was chosen to follow his father steps as to expand his vision over the decades through their achievements. Along the years the business has improved as they have expanded to additional tracks such as: Daytona International Speedway, Talladega Superspeedway and Darlington Raceway.
Without a doubt, the Nascar World has lost an innovator, who made of Nascar what it is today; a top level sport, famous all over the U.S, with an original vision which made the foundations grow.
