Nextel Cup Race Preview

By Julie Smith

Considered as one of the most challenging circuits of the Nextel Cup, the Pennsylvania 500 raceway at Pocono will be the next test for NASCAR drivers. Only 43 of the 46 cars that will take part of the qualifying single round will have a spot in the big event to be held on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Sunday’s race will be a key competition of Nextel Cup due to the characteristics of the raceway, the unique triangular circuit of the Cup. Chevrolet appears as a dominant in the starting line after winning the Cup three consecutive times; the last two times with Denny Hamlin who will look for his third victory. However, the top 10 is full of solid contenders as Miller Lite Dodge driver, Kurt Bush who finished second in both races last year and is one of the best flat track racers. He will definitely not lose the chance to show his talent this weekend at Pocono.

On the list of firm opponents we can also find; Jeff Gordon who already achieved eight top-10 finishes in his last eight races in addition to the International Traveler Carl Edwards leader of the Bush Series and a young talent in NASCAR. He had improved six positions through the last 12 races. Tony Stewart, the winner of Nextel Cup stage at Indianapolis is also aiming to win but remains fifth in the standings after being penalized for the use of inappropriate language during his TV apparition after his victory last Sunday.

There are a lot of great figures to pick a favorite but as usual in a NASCAR race, blown tires and broken parts will be part of the show and more than talent the pilots will need luck.
