Nextel Cup: Sylvania 300 Preview
By Julie Smith
Nextel Cup chase will begin at Sylvania 300 circuit in New Hampshire International Speedway; the pilots will have to cover a total of 317 miles in 300 laps. The race is the only one outside Daytona and Talladega to demand a restrictor plate since the adoption of the 358 cubic inch formula, which means a slower run for the cars in prevention of possible crashes.
In the battle for the championship we have Kevin Harvick, the title holder of the 2006 Chase, and Jimmie Johnson, who is a prominent contender since is one of the only two drivers that have qualified for the Chase all four years along with Matt Kenseth. Johnson starts with a 20 points lead over the second place Gordon. Johnson has been in the top 12 for 24 consecutive weeks this season. Kurt Bush, who won the New Hampshire 2004, and Tony Steward are also strong opponents.
However, Gordon and Jimmie Johnson have dominated the regular season with a combined 10 victories in 26 races what make us guess that the combat will be mainly between Hendrick drivers. With a bit of luck, they will handle the rivalry since they are good friends outside the race track.
All Chase drivers will begin the race with 5,000 points plus 10 for each victory in the first 26 races. The action will start at 2 pm eastern time on Sunday, September 16th in the 1058 mile oval speedway. The first place will obtain $266,461 dollars and will take advantage in the general qualification of the Nextel Cup. The second event in the 2007 Chase for the NASCAR Nextel Cup is the Dodge Dealers 400 which will take place in Delaware on September 23rd.
