Pat Riley maybe done with his coaching career
Por: Cindy Ferguson
Pat Riley may leave his position as the Miami Heat’s head coach due to a work overload in trying to be the team’s president as well.
Last season Riley was out for around six weeks due to knee surgery and a hip replacement and although he signed a contract extension during the off-season that placed him as the team’s coach until the season of 2009-2010, he might just be done with is coaching career.
The 62 year old could leave his coaching position after the end of this season, because he strongly feels that the team’s best interest may be for him to only concentrate on being the team president and to deal only with those duties.
A newspaper from South Florida stated that if he did leave, it would not be until after the season is over and that Riley still has some doubts.
Riley made a promise to the Miami Heats owner, Micky Arison, that he take on both roles for at least the next to years, but Riley at the time did not take into consideration the load he would be putting on his back. Now he is somewhat discouraged and saddened by the fact that he could not hack it. This situation has him constantly thinking about the right thing to do for all parties and obviously trying his best not to disappoint anyone.
After being the man in charge of both positions he now understands why almost every NBA team chooses to keep the roles separate. He mostly leans towards the position of being president because he does not have to deal with personality conflicts on the job, while as being coach the task is much more personal.
Many would like to see him stay as coach being that he has been with Miami Heat since 1995 and even though he will still be with the team as its president they most likely will not see him on the courts as often.
Riley as the team’s president will also be in charge of finding his own replacement _that’s if he decides to no longer coach_ and two of his options at this moment include Erik Spoelstra or Mike Fratello.
