The Hornets Are Finally Getting Some Respect

By: Cindy Ferguson

The New Orleans Hornets aren’t a very well respected team in the league, but that just may change in the near future now that they have been able to defeat some of the top teams in the NBA.

Saturday night’s performance against the San Antonio Spurs was incredible and it allowed the team to defeat the Spurs 102-78. This game became the Hornets’ eight consecutive win; the team is currently ahead of the Phoenix Suns by half a game, the Dallas Mavericks by one and a half games and the Spurs by two and a half games.

Power forward and center, Tyson Chandler, feels it is time for the Hornets to start getting some respect from fans and other NBA teams as well and says the teams goes into a game feeling they are going to win as opposed to feeling they are the underdogs. Chandler stated the team has proved they can beat the good and bad teams in the league and he is very proud of the work the Hornets have accomplished.

David West and Peja Stojakovic played important roles in the Hornets big win with West scoring 32 points and Stojakovic adding 22 points and four 3 point shots. According to Gregg Popovich, Spurs coach, West was the main man in giving San Antonio such a hard time and admitted their lost was due to the Hornet‘s beyond excellent play. West stated the team has been building towards bettering their defensive play in order to beat the stronger teams within the Western Conference, and their hard work has indeed paid off.

In the second half of the game the Hornets outscored the Spurs 60-35 and then took over the game and headed for the lead for the remainder of the game. During the third quarter they went on a 14-5 run and took the game to 72-64 with just one quarter left to play.

New Orleans ended the game with a 54% shooting rate being they hit 44 out of 81 shots. They now have the best record for the Western Conference and well, obviously this deserve respect.

"New Orleans was great. Tip your hat to them," Popovich said. "We hung for a half and lost our juice, but that was due to their great play. You can see why they have the best record in the West."

Paul's jumper gave the Hornets a 25-point lead with about 4 1/2 minutes to play. They went up by 26 off Stojakovic's 3 with 3:55 on the clock. Ime Udoka added 13 points for San Antonio, Ginobili scored 11 and Fabricio Oberto contributed 10.

The game was indeed very physical. Chandler appeared to hurt his nose when he got caught up with Ginobili, who was driving to the basket and also crashed to the floor with him, late in the second quarter. Chandler left the court holding a towel to his nose but returned for the third quarter.
