Ohio State is finally number one!

By Cindy Ferguson

After forty-five long years the NCAA Basketball Division 1 team, Ohio State, finally reached the number spot in The Associated Press college basketball this past Monday. The Buckeyes have not occupied that particular spot in the AP rankings since 1962 when John Havlicek and Jerry Lucas led them to a winning streak of three straight final four appearances.

Ohio State held the number one spot from 1960 through 1962 for a total of twenty-seven consecutive polls and the Buckeyes also won the national championship in 1960 but lost the championship title game to Cincinnati in 1961 and again 1962.

In this years poll freshman Greg Oden and Mike Conley Jr. led them when they moved up after defeating Wisconsin for the number one spots. Ohio State with a 26-3 record advanced one spot in the rankings, receiving 62 first-place votes and 1,786 points from the 72-member national media panel.

The Buckeyes coach, Thad Matta, was extremely pleased with Ohio States victory of 49-48 that gave the team their second straight Big Ten title since his coaching with them. He also made several uplifting comments regarding the team’s great outcome lately and stressed the fact to keep focusing on their program. They were also ranked number one in the coach’s poll last week, which gives even more confidence to keep moving up.

A week break will do the team good as they have had the flu virus going on amongst various players and it will also give them time to recover from their physical performance which has them somewhat strung out. They are scheduled to finish the regular season on Saturday against Michigan. Buckeye fans eagerly await the game and depending on the outcome they could have a shot to continue for another championship title.
