Goestenkors is gone
By Cindy Ferguson
Gail Goenstenkors of 44 years of age and current coach for Duke is leaving the team after 15 long and hard worked seasons to coach the Texas women’s basketball team.
Goestenkors put together inspiration during her coaching stay at Duke that include winning seven Atlantic Coast Conference coach of the year awards, accumulating a career record of 396-99, four Final Fours and two appearances in the national championship game. Her last Duke team was one of her best as the Blue Devils finished the regular season ranked number one and held the top overall seed in the NCAA Tournament.
She will be replacing Jody Condrat after her unexpected resignation last month in which Texas spokespersons made it clear they would be prepared to pay for a first-class coach and had Goestenkors in the eye as their top candidate.
Goestenkors went and check out the Texas campus last week and met with women's athletic director Chris Plonsky. Upon her arrival fans and players held a rally on Duke’s campus to insist for her to stay.
The offer was just too good for her to turn down being that Texas is regarded as having one of nation's best curriculums with its unequaled amenities and Duke could not top off their high cap salary.
For Duke it is a shame to loose a coach in her category but for Texas and Goestenkors it is a new opportunity not just money-wise but career wise as well. Duke wishes her the best and Texas is going to give her a warm welcoming.
