Boeckman will start for Ohio State
By Cindy Ferguson
Todd Boeckman will start as Ohio State’s quarterback for the team’s 118th season opener on Saturday against Youngstown State. Boeckman will be replacing Troy Smith who has gone to play with the Cleveland Browns after winning the Heisman Trophy last season.
The six-foot-five and 235-pound player was listed as number one according to the depth chart at the beginning of practice this past spring and he out won Rob Schoenhoft, Antonio Henton and Joe Bauserman who were all competing for the same position despite the fact that Boeckman may have more knowledge than the others in practice, but surely not in games. The 23-year-old forth year junior has thrown only ten passes in six appearances ever since he arrived to the university grounds in 2004.
According to coach Jim Tressel, Boeckman is the man to handle the job and does exactly what the team needs him to do out on the field. Tressel believes his greatest advantage over other teammates is his complete understanding of the entire system and what is consists of and feels he has a lot of experience.
Boeckman stated he is more than ready and confident to take on the responsibility of acquiring Smith’s position and has studied to get this opportunity he has long awaited. According to him the key in playing a good quality game is in not turning over the ball and always giving your best.
