Falcons Quarterback Gets 23 Months Sentence

By Julie Smith

Vick, who was once, one of the highest paid and best profile players in the N.F.L., will lose out the best years of his career after being sentenced to 23 months in prison due to a dog fighting felony. The 27-years-old Falcons’ quarterback who had a $130 million contract and a quite lucrative endorsement deal has now been suspended indefinitely from professional football.

Despite the early admission of the guilt, a public regret and the participation in an animal sensitivity training course; Vick was denied an "acceptance of responsibility" credit which will reduce his sentence. Apparently, Michael was more directly involved than he admitted and also tested positive for marijuana use violation of the terms set for his release.

However, due to federal procedures for good behavior, Vick’s sentence could end as early as the 2009 summer meaning he could eventually play that season. Even though, he is expected to lose millions he would have earned in salary as well as endorsements in 2008; the Atlanta Journal Constitution estimated that Vick has in fact incurred financial losses of $142 million, including $71 million in salary earnings from the Falcons, $50 million in endorsement income and nearly $20 million in previously paid bonuses. Moreover, is probably that no merchant company will touch him ever to promote their product.

Vick apologized to the court and his family members, who along with other supporters - most of them fans – who were present in the courtroom. But for the judge about to decide Vick’s fate, those words were not enough.

In regards to the incident, U.S. Attorney Chuck Rosenberg added "This was an efficient, professional who thorough investigation exposed a seamy side of our society…I trust Mr. Vick learned important lessons and that his admission of guilt will speed his rehabilitation."

On the other hand, animal rights groups’ representatives attending the sentencing applauded the judge’s decision. According to them “The 23 month prison sentence imposed on Monday was harsh yet appropriate for the case”.

Vick’s future in football is now in doubt. The NFL declined comments after the sentencing, saying that Vick's case would be "reviewed at the appropriate time." The verdict definitely comes in dismay of his family, teammates and also the fans who have been emotionally stroke by Michael’s career over the years.
