NFL: Kansas City Losing Streak Ends
By Stephen Lars
The NFL Kansas City Chiefs have finally end their longest losing streak in the team’s history by winning over the Denver Broncos.
This past Sunday we saw a completely different team on the field, the Chiefs changed their strategies and Larry Johnson ran 198 yards and scored two touchdowns giving his team a solid advantage. This became the first Kansas City triumph since October 21st, 2007 basically, a record of lost games which made the fans very upset to the point of asking for the General Manager and quarterbacks’ coach dismissal.
Nick Novak scored three field goals for the Chiefs (1-3), and short after Tony González intercepted a 10-yards pass to set the scoreboard 23-13 with some time remaining. Matt Prater scored a field goal of 33 yard, which set the score at 26-19. Johnson then managed a run sealing the game providing to his Head Coach Herm Edwards the game victory.
The Broncos which were the rival team were along the five NFL teams holding a 3-0 record, due in part to a series of lucky events which include an official's premature whistle and the New Orleans' kicker Martin Gramatica's inaccuracy. Some minutes later, Brett Kern managed a kick but for only 26 yards which gave the Chiefs possession of the in its own yard, but Novak failed at it. Another key player, Cutler finished managing 29 of the 49 passes over 361 yards besides two interceptions. Brandon Marshall set a score pass in the 16 yards, which gave the Broncos an advantage of 7-6, until Johnson scored a yard after Brandon Flowers returned the lost ball at the 37 yards.
One of the things that hurt Denver greatly was their quarterback Jay Cutler who was just not himself throughout the game. The Broncos tried a short kick after Prater's 33 yards field goal and another Denver player put his hands on the ball. But Chiefs’ Kolby Smith emerged with the possession of the ball and Johnson quickly scored.
There were also many opportunities which Kansas failed to materialize therefore we can certainly say it was a mixture of bad moves and poor luck on Denver’s side besides a decrease in leading offense and smart moves on Johnson’s behalf. Additionally, a strong blow from Turk McBride caused that Eddie Royal would lose the ball in the first possession carried by Denver, but Brandon Carr recovered it.
The Kansas City Chiefs team will still need to prove if the strategies they implemented will work for the rest of the games and this will be shown in the following weeks as we will see them playing other leading teams which are steady positioning their places in the season.
