Isn't Matt Cassel supposed to be getting better?

Many were eager on watching Sundays game Chargers vs. Patriots and even more enthusiastic on writing a great article on how Matt Cassel saved the day again, but at the end, he gave us more doubts and fears to carve about.

By Chuck Berkley

Some articles have been posted on Matt Cassel since he replaced season injured Tom Brady. We have praised his ability to adapt, his leadership on the field and especially that he can make a differentiation between knowing where to go with the ball during no-pressure practices and being able to imitate that in high-stress game conditions, so bottom line is “in Matt we trust”?

It’s still early in the season to criticize a player or even a team, but October 12th game between San Diego Chargers and New England Patriots left many fans and sports writers wondering if game conditions should be portrayed on a single man, the quarterback.

With 9:12 left on the 3rd quarter and still one full to go, we noticed at that point that the game was over. Now, there is no point to argue whether or not Matt Cassel can fill Brady’s shoes, we left that behind since Tom got injured, and the idea was for the team to adapt its game plan and strategies to a legit starting quarterback. Let’s get real for a moment, what happened on Sunday’s game was expected a while ago, but the media keeps pushing the Brady case around and for us, that’s not the point.

So, Matt Cassel is inexperience in class A games, but can we really blame him for any given Sunday disaster? Should we ask for coach Belichick's opinion? In fact many saw his opinion just two seconds before the game was over… he call a time out, leaving everybody wondering why such a call?, if the game was already 30-10 on the Chargers side. As an educated guess on that it could be said it’s pretty simple, drama.

Ok, Philip Rivers threw 3 touchdown passes and San Diego's defense distended quarterback Matt Cassel on fourth and goal from the 1-yard line, now, I wonder if the Chargers will be able to repeat the game tactics on Buffalo next Sunday the 19th, seriously doubt it.

Back to Matt Cassel; at some point in the game he had four attempts in the goal line, but everybody saw what happened on three of those, but the last one sustained many questions… Matt tried to carry the ball by himself, but was blocked by his own defense; that’s correct, his own guys got on the way and made him miss the touchdown.

The Patriots offense had a lot of blame too; Chargers Philip Rivers threw for three touchdowns and O’Neal, Floyd and Jackson, who are regular players but never shine at times, blew the clouds away with their touchdowns.

New England scored their smallest number of points since their last road loss back in 2006 against Miami and they are 3-2 on table now.

I’m not looking on progression for Matt Cassel and New England based on this game, but the stats show them on .500, which is still good. Matt Cassel has learned to change a play at the line of scrimmage based on the defense and he is also able to identify the open receiver, now the team should be capable to get him the ball before getting smoked by a linebacker for the next games, if this formula works, maybe my next article will read “Matt Cassel, hero again”.
