NFL - Jennings signed a contract extension with the Packers

By Audrey Nolan

On Thursday the Green Bay Packers announced that they had signed Greg Jennings in a 3 year extension contract. The deal is for $27 million but it can be worth up to $31 million if he plays in a Pro Bowl level and it was informed that he received $16 million in guarantee of the deal; he will be a free agent again after the 2012 season.

The negotiations went very calm and they got to a deal very fast and both parts seemed to be pleased with the results. The deal that is called to be a blockbuster deal for the Packers, will give a relief for them for the moment since they have some other players whose contract will expire this season and will be unrestricted free agent. That list includes Pro Bowl safety Nick Collins, linebacker Aaron Kampman, nose tackle Ryan Pickett, left tackle Chad Clifton, left guard Daryn Colledge, center/guard Jason Spitz, safety Atari Bigby and defensive end Johnny Jolly all of them in the starting lineup.

The Packers head coach Mike McCarthy expressed that he was very excited of having Jennings in the team for some more years. He also said that Jennings deserved that contract extension because he has been always very compromised and responsible with the team, as well as for the way he plays.

Jennings will be now the second best paid player on the Packers behind quarterback Aaron Rogers, who receives $10.83 millions annually.

"I'm grateful and I understand that I'm blessed," Jennings said today. "Just to know I'm going to have that financial stability for not only myself but for my family, my children, it's an exciting feeling. It really hasn't hit me yet -- probably (not) until I get that first check. I'm sure it will sink in sometime soon”.

After the contract expires he could apply for a big contract deal with some other team, and Jennings was very pleased with that since he said that he always expects better, not for the money but for him. He expressed that he is always trying to improve in what he does, and added that he will continue playing as long as he loves the game, because is the love for what we do what really matters.

Greg Jennings started his football career in the Western Michigan University where he was named to the second team All-Mid American team in 2003 and part of the All-MAC team in 2004. He ended up his time with the Broncos with 238 receptions for 3539 yards and 39 touchdowns. He signed a 4 year contract with the Green Bay Packers on July 2006 to start playing professionally; the deal was worth $2.85 million with a $1.24 signing bonus. He was named starting wide receiver along with Donald Driver since the first season with the Packers. Jennings ended up the 2008 season with 80 receptions for 1292 yards and 9 touchdowns.
