NFL - Steve McNair was Murdered Last Weekend

By Audrey Nolan

The NFL has been in an uproar this week, since former NFL player Steve McNair was shot and killed last week by Sahel Kazemi, his 20-year-old girlfriend. The young woman allegedly thought that the already-married McNair was engaged in a second affair.

The police involved in the investigation have said that Kazemi shot McNair four times while the former football star slept on the sofa. Kazemi then shot herself. The incident took place last Saturday morning at McNair’s condominium in Nashville, Tennessee.

According to police, not only did Kazemi believe that McNair was having a second affair, but she also was experiencing financial difficulties. At the time of her death, Kazemi was struggling to pay for two cars in addition to her rent.

McNair met Kazemi six months prior at a sports café he attended with his family. Kazemi was a waitress at the time. According to neighbors, the couple then spent a great deal of time in a condo that McNair shared with a friend. The story explained by Kazemi’s family is an oft-repeated one; according to relatives, Sahel was certain that McNair was going to seek a divorce from his wife of 12 years, Michelle, with whom he has four children. After the murder, however,  a friend of the McNair family stated that McNair’s wife was completely oblivious to the affair and that no divorce proceedings had begun.

Nashville’s police chief, Ronal Serpas, said in an official statement that Kazemi shot McNair in the head first and then twice on his chest before making another final shot to his head. Kazmi then bent her knees and shot herself in the head, falling onto McNair’s feet. The gun was found underneath her body.

"We do know that she was clearly sending a message during the last five to seven days of her life that things were going bad quickly," Serpas said, adding that there were no signs that she told anyone she intended to harm McNair.

Steve McNair, also known as “Air McNair,” started his career in college playing with Alcorn State. In his senior season he won the Walter Payton Award as the top I-AA player and finished in third for the Heisman Trophy. He was the third pick in the 1995 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers, with whom he signed a seven year contract. He began his first season as Oilers starter in 1997. McNair was injured early in 1999 but had recovered in time for the newly-moved and renamed Tennessee Titans to enter the Super Bowl. Although the team lost, McNair signed a $47 million six-year contract.

Despite a calf and ankle injury in 2003, McNair boasted the best numbers of his career, including 24 touchdown passes and a 100.4 quarterback rating. In 2005, the Titans allowed McNair to negotiate a deal with the Baltimore Ravens. After two great seasons with the Ravens, altercations with the police led McNair to announce his retirement in April of 2008, after 13 years in the NFL.
