Olympic Athletics - New World Record at the 100-metre Final
By Cindy Ferguson
The amazing Bird’s Nest Olympic Stadium at Beijing, China, was witness of an unforgettable entrance to the finishing line by the “fastest man on Earth” in the night of the last Saturday August 16th , who set a new world record on the final 100-metre sprint.
The Jamaican Usain Bolt amazed the whole world in just 9.69 seconds, time that took him to win the 100-metre sprint gold medal with a sensational performance, become the first Jamaican to win the title, and broke his own world record of 9.72 seconds established on last May at the Reebok Grand Prix in New York. This new world record is even more impressive in the light of the fact that he wasn’t wind aided this time, since the wind speed at the stadium was zero at the moment the race took place.
Usain Bolt of almost 22 years of age is nicknamed by the media as the “Lightning Bolt” due to his surprising running speed. He was born at Trelawny, Jamaica, and since his early high school days he began achieving titles in the 200 and 400 meters sprints. His first world-wide appearance was in the 2002 World Junior Championship, in Kingston, Jamaica, where we won the gold medal in the 200 meters at the age of 15.
He began his professional career in 2004 and had the opportunity to participate in the Athens Olympics but he had an unfortunate leg injury and got eliminated at the 200 meters first round. However, in the following years he conquered several titles, including gold and silver medals in 200 meters at the Central American and Caribbean Championship 2005 in Bahamas and at the World Championships in Athletics at Japan in 2007, respectively.
But the night of last Saturday will be always in the mind of this amazing sprinter. He seemed as he was running so effortless, so secure, and he even began celebrating 15 meters before the finish line, with his arms extended, receiving the crowd’s acclamation. He was so excited to know he won the gold medal that he didn’t even realized about his new record until he was running through his victory lap.
Nevertheless, Bolt’s target is still at a higher level. He has declared that he aims to be a triple gold medalist this year, so he’s now after the 200m and the 4x100m relay. He already passed through the first two rounds of the 200m on Monday 18th; he will be facing the semifinals next Tuesday and the finals on Wednesday. As for the 4x100 relay event, the heats will be held on Thursday 21st and the final race will be on Friday 22nd.
Whit all the pass drug scandals that sprinters have been involved in the last years, there’s a lot of speculation in the sport. However, Bolt is not worried about the rumors as he has been tested several times, including three times since he came to Beijing, and he has been always found clean. Hopefully, sprinters as Bolt could make the world to believe that the 100m race can be once again one of the greatest and most exciting events of the Olympic Games.
